A whole school approach to parental engagement

More and more schools understand the critical importance of working with parents in order to raise outcomes for children and young people.

According to Professor John Hattie “ the effect of parental engagement over a student’s school career is the equivalent of adding two to three years to their education.”

Those schools which have built an effective home-school partnership have found that it can be transformational. However, many schools still struggle to engage their parents.

Parent Councils UK has extensive experience in this area and is offering workshops to support schools in developing an effective whole-school parental engagement strategy. Please find details of our upcoming workshop in Sheffield below.

One day workshop for senior leaders, teachers, governors and parent support workers with Fiona Carnie

Thursday 26 April 2018, 9.30 – 15.30 – Hilton Sheffield, Victoria Quays, Furnival Road, Sheffield, S4 7YB

When parents are involved in their children’s education children do better on a range of measures. Parental engagement is thus a key lever for school improvement - and yet many schools struggle to involve their parents, particularly those they most want to reach. Ofsted recognises the critical importance of this work and inspects schools on how they listen and respond to parents in the judgement on leadership and management.
This workshop will explore a range of strategies that schools can use to develop an effective and valuable partnership with parents in order to raise attainment. The barriers that prevent parental participation will also be discussed with suggestions as to how these can be addressed.

The session will cover:

  • Improving home/school communication
  • Gaining parental support for learning
  • Reaching out to disengaged families
  • Listening and responding to parents’ views
  • Building links with the local community

This is an interactive session with opportunities for participants to share ideas and learn from each other. New ideas for engaging parents will be discussed and participants will leave with an action plan for building parent participation at their school.
